Not Just Sibling Rivalry

By Saige Caldwell

Ryan grew up in Kamas Utah, before his parents got divorced and he moved here to the valley. Ryan (also known as my dad) always told me stories about growing up on a farm, as most dads do. The type of stories like “I walked to school in the snow, barefoot, uphill both ways” stories we have all heard. Ryan’s favorite part of his childhood was growing up on the farm, and all the pets that he had. I knew that he had had an experience with gender inequality or gender roles, directly related to him or not.

Gender role is a set of norms set by society, in these roles, men were the breadwinners of the family, they took care of the farms and livestock, and the women took care of the house and children. (huffington) These rules of behavior were taught from one generation to another.” In the 1970’s, which is when this took place, gender roles were clearly defined, it wasn’t until the late 70’s that these gender roles started to become blurry. Ryan and Tiffany’s dad grew up in a time where men were believed to be better suited for situations like training horses.

Ryan’s story got me curious as to how we as a society can put these gender roles to rest. As stated before the belief of gender roles are passed down from one generation to the next.  You have to become aware or your gender biases and then correct them. (aauw) You then you would have to teach the next generation the same thing. I have to say that that is what my dad, Ryan, has done. He is teaching his children about gender stereotypes and how to overcome them though the stories he tells them.
